Paint-Out/Photo Shoot

at the Dutchess County Fair
to benefit the Dutchess County Arts Council


AUGUST 25 -26, 2010
Exhibit at Fairgrounds AUGUST 27-29;
Followed by online auction of artwork.


The Dutchess County Arts Council invites you to participate in a PAINT-OUT/PHOTO SHOOT at the Dutchess County Fair, on Wednesday and/or Thursday, August 25th & 26th.


Artists are encouraged to depict and interpret any aspect of the Dutchess County Fair that sparks their interest – the midway, people, animals, the agricultural products, the food, etc. The work must be produced on site on one or both days of the PAINT-OUT/PHOTO SHOOT, and the final piece must be ready by Friday, August 27th. (The work must be ready to hang – signed, framed, and wired.) The maximum size is 18″x24″. Any frame is acceptable, even a wood strip frame. Plexiglass only, no glass is permitted.


Finished artwork will be on view Friday night through Sunday, August 27-29, at the fairgrounds, in Building D (Specialty Foods Building). The public will be invited to vote for their favorite painting or photo onsite or online and all art will be available for purchase through an online auction. The Dutchess County Fair will select art work from those entries with the most votes to use in promotional materials for the 2011 Dutchess County Fair. The work will be on view at the Cunneen Hackett Art Center in Poughkeepsie from August 31 – September 27. The online auction will be open during that time.


Artists will receive a 50% commission on all work sold on the online auction. The other 50% will benefit the Dutchess County Arts Council Arts Fund.


Submit your application and fee to the PAINT-OUT/PHOTO SHOOT to the Dutchess County Arts Council by August 6th.

$30 for DCAC members
Fee includes admission to Fair; work exhibited at Fair, online voting and auction, and exhibition at Cunneen Hackett Art Center during the month of September.


$55 for non-members Fee includes admission to Fair; work exhibited at Fair, online voting and auction, and exhibition at Cunneen Hackett Art Center during the month of September. The fee also includes a one-year membership to the Dutchess County Arts Council.

Somebody Scream NY

Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 – Leroy Thomas and Zydeco Roadrunners

Leroy Thomas and Zydeco Roadrunners play traditional style Louisiana zydeco. Their high energy dance music is a favorite at home in Louisiana and on the road across the USA. Thomas started playing drums at eight. Not long after he started playing drums, he also began to learn the accordion, eventually mastering both the button accordion used by Zydeco musicians like John Delafose and Boozoo Chavis and the piano accordion, the instrument that Clifton Chenier played. At 19, he joined the band headed by his father (who today continues to play drums and sing at venues in Louisiana and Texas). In addition to playing music, Leroy Thomas did auto painting and body work and also worked on a rice and soybean farm. After moving to Houston, he became a pipe welder, but he continued as a musician. With the release of the his CD entitled Right Now is Primetime, Leroy Thomas has shown his strength as a songwriter as well as being able to compose catchy zydeco tunes. It is no surprise his material is being played by numerous other zydeco bands. Don’t miss this chance to see the real thing – Louisiana Zydeco (and some Blues, too) in your own backyard.

Time – The standard times are:

Friday and Saturday Nights: Dance lesson at 7pm, music from 8-11:30 pm.

Sunday Nights: Dance lesson at 5pm, music from 6-9:30 pm.

Dances may be other times for special events – Check listing aboves.


Cost – The standard cost is $20. Cost may vary for special events.

Venue:

Grace Hall – Home of the Ossinging Eagles 1545, 7 Old Albany Post Rd., Ossining, NY. This funky little dance space is a 100-year-old, former church that has been a setting in Hollywood productions. It features a wooded dance floor, air-conditioning, open bar, and plenty of safe, free parking. The location is moments from Ossining and Croton-Harmon train stations on the MetroNorth Hudson Line. Hint- there are direct trains from Grand Central Terminal to the Croton-Harmon station that is closer walk or cab.

Directions:

From Taconic State Pkwy., take Rt. 134 exit west for 3 miles to right at light on Rt. 9A North, then go approx. 1 mile and make the 3rd right at large Shady Farm Road Sign (also smaller sign for General Electric). After taking exit, take a quick left (right takes you into GE facility) and then turn left on Old Albany Post Rd (note that GPS and online maps may say to take a right – see note belwo). The club is 0.1 mile on right.

From Rt. 9 (between Ossining and Croton-on-Hudson), turn on Old Albany Post Rd. across from St. Augustine’s Church and School. The turn is just south of Rt. 9 and 9A split. If you are heading North it’s a right before the light; heading South, take a left at the light. After the turn, the hall is approx. 0.2 miles on left.

Important notes for Internet Maps and GPS users: Here is a screenshot of the correct map location of the club indicated by the Red Star. The maps services show an incorrect location indicated by the Black Dot (here is the original, incorrect map from MapQuest). Please be aware of this problem if you use GPS or internet mops

Also, you can take MetroNorth to the Croton-Harmon station on the Hudson Line. The hall is about half mile walk or a short cab ride from the station.


Refreshments:

Reasonably priced cash bar, soda and water for sale. No food is not generally for sale except for snacks – you may bring your own food or we can direct to nearby restaurants. Please support the venue and do not bring your own drinks.

Ossining Waterfront Fireworks

Ossining Fireworks Display will be held on Friday, July 2nd at the Louis Engel Waterfront Park. Music begins 7pm, Fireworks approx 9:15pm Join us for a great show and enjoy entertainment before hand with a concert at Louis Engel Waterfront Park starting at 7:00pm. This is a wonderful event and we hope you can be with us for an evening of fun. A great way to kick off the holiday weekend. Vehicle Access on Westerly Road and Depot Plaza will be restricted. At the conclusion of the event, no vehicles will be permitted to leave until pedestrians have safely left the viewing area. On July 2nd, only metered parking spaces will be available in the west parking lot. Alternate Commuter Parking Available on Central Avenue 2 hr. Parking Restriction Suspended.

Barbara Levine is a resident of Ossining, New York, and is originally from Brooklyn. An artist from a very early age, Barbara attended Music and Art High School in Manhattan, majoring in art, and graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in Graphic Arts and Illustration.


Barbara then began a long career in book publishing as an Art Director. In her years in publishing, Barbara designed book jackets and interiors for fiction, non-fiction and children’s books, often working with major authors. Barbara worked for Holt, Macmillan and Harper Collins, among other publishing houses. During those years, Barbara continued to paint, exhibit her work and teach. Barbara also taught an after-school art program for the Ossining schools when her two children were students in the system, and worked as an art instructor in summer programs around Westchester County.


Today, Barbara works with children and continues to paint, often drawing inspiration from her travels as well as her local environment. Barbara has completed several ketubahs, a Jewish marriage document that is also a form of ceremonial art. Over the course of her career, Barbara has worked in various media, including oil, pen and ink, pastels and watercolor. She also has produced needlepoints, jewelry pieces, and other crafts. Barbara recently completed a competitive, two-year training program to earn a position as a docent at the Jewish Museum of New York in Manhattan. Barbara continues to evolve in her work and enjoy the creative process.
