The hope when you create something is that on some level it will resonate with the viewer. This is true whether the content is naturalistic, narrative or abstract. While the artist’s conscious intentions are important, there are almost always other, less conscious aspects seen or interpreted by others. These change over time and place. So that something superficially static like a painting or sculpture can continue to evolve and have meaning to others now and in the future.

The use of words, letters or numbers can enhance a work; but there is also the risk of limiting the viewer’s interpretation.Despite this, there are always components that can connect with the observer’s inner world of experiences and associations. Color, form, composition and style are among these and hopefully are not diminished by words or titles.

In the end, a creative work is very personal. It is a part of the world processed through the artist.
